Home ownership is deeply embedded in Australian mythology. But for many the dream has become a nightmare.
Owners are under significant interest rate stress. Buyers feel locked out of a red-hot market. Renters have copped savage increases amid record-low vacancies.
Australia needs millions more homes to meet population growth. Governments are investing big — but not enough to hit their own targets and fighting fierce resistance to higher density living.
How did we get into this mess? And how do we boost affordability and accelerate construction to keep the Aussie housing dream alive?

Minister for Small Business Julie Collins says the number of homeless Australians is “concerning” and Labor is continuing to work on fixing the issue.
“This is critical – on census night in 2021, there was 123,000 homeless Australians and it is concerning, and it should be concerning to all of us in this place, it’s a really serious issue,” Ms Collins said during Question Time on Thursday.
“Our national housing accord of course is another ten thousand affordable and social homes – there are already properties starting to go up on the ground around Australia today,” she said.

It’s getting harder than ever to find a home in Australia with less than 1% of rental properties available for occupancy. That’s sending rents soaring to eye-watering levels, deepening a cost-of-living crunch.
The population growth of Greater Sydney is also exacerbating its lack of housing supply. Here’s how the housing market’s “vicious spiral” is dragging the country into a deeper crisis. Bloomberg's Kurumi Mori reports.

Up to one million people in Germany are considered to be experiencing homelessness. Despite having a job or a pension, many are unable to afford a home of their own.
According to estimates, the number of people experiencing homelessness has been rising steadily since 2008. For too long, politicians have ignored the problem and neglected to collect comprehensive data - even though the issue has long since reached the heart of society. It’s only now in 2022 that the German government will have collected nationwide data to assemble official statistics. Because only people housed in community or emergency shelters are counted, this analysis will be supported by additional reporting on the number of people living on the streets.
The problem is exacerbated by overburdened aid and support systems, a lack of coordination, a tight housing market and real estate speculation. For experts such as social anthropologist Luisa Schneider, it mainly comes down to a lack of strategy: "At the moment we find ourselves in a situation where we are managing, but not solving homelessness. If we don’t change our social structure, these numbers are going to skyrocket. The problem can’t be solved with our current system."
Reporter Max Neidlinger accompanied several people experiencing homelessness. Their stories are examples of an ever graver problem: More and more people are homeless or, less visibly, being housed in makeshift accommodation. There is a lack of both affordable housing and a long-term strategy to support those affected. Yet in a joint declaration of EU member states, Germany has pledged to work to end homelessness by 2030.
Homeless people in Germany have been forced to fend for themselves. Many of them are unable to seek help or are unaware of possible assistance. Some feel a sense of shame and oftentimes they live hidden away, somehow managing to survive. How is it possible that in one of the world’s wealthiest countries, people increasingly cannot afford a home of their own, despite having a job or a pension? And why has there been inaction for so long?

Finland's remarkable success in reducing homelessness is often credited to the innovative Housing First approach. This model offers stable housing as the primary intervention, complemented by essential support services to address the root causes of homelessness and help individuals rebuild their lives. Amid the escalating homelessness crisis in the United States, evidence-backed solutions like Housing First often take a back seat to counterproductive measures like criminalizing poverty and conducting homeless sweeps. While skeptics argue that Finland's achievements cannot be replicated in America, Invisible People embarked on a transformative journey to Helsinki, Finland, to explore the potential of implementing the Housing First approach on a large scale in the United States. What's even more striking is that Housing First was born in America. Yet, Finland has embraced it and witnessed an incredible reduction in homelessness, plummeting from over 20,000 homeless people to less than 4,000 in just a decade.
Countless media outlets have highlighted Finland's achievements in homelessness reduction, with the Housing First model at the forefront. However, our investigation uncovered that the Finnish approach goes beyond Housing First. Finland's strategy involves prioritizing the development of affordable housing and cultivating a culture genuinely dedicated to improving homeless services to house people quickly and permanently. While Housing First has played a significant role in their success, it's just one piece of the puzzle.
Unlike the United States, where the emphasis often lies solely on housing placement, Finland recognizes that people need more than just a roof over their heads to thrive. In Finland, they prioritize placing the individual within the housing unit, ensuring that they have a sense of purpose rather than merely survival.
Invisible People is known for its dedication to telling the authentic stories of homelessness, offering viewers a raw and unfiltered glimpse into the lives of those experiencing it firsthand. In this special episode, we take our commitment to authenticity to the next level by providing the most genuine and comprehensive look into Housing First that has ever been captured on video. Our mission is to shed light on the realities of homelessness, challenge preconceptions, and explore viable solutions. Join us as we dive deep into Finland's remarkable approach, presenting an authentic narrative that showcases the transformative power of compassionate policies and affordable housing.

A year ago the prospect of having nowhere to live never would have occurred to Adam, his wife and two children, who were living in a three-bedroom home in West Bromwich that they had rented for eight years.
Adam works as an electrician and his wife works as a teaching assistant. They had always paid their rent on time.
But their children, Holly, 12, and her younger brother, will now be among a record number of children who are homeless this Christmas.

Australia's cities are changing. Some are sprawling while others are opting to build up. In Melbourne, the Victorian state government has promised hundreds of thousands of new homes will be built in a decade. Hayden Champion Silver asked: I’m 21 years old and I became homeless in November last year after leaving a traumatic home situation. I’m from Melton in Melbourne’s West. There was no crisis accommodation available for me in my area, so I had to move to a youth refuge 40 kilometres away when Hope Street Youth and Family Services (https://www.hopest.org/) found me a place. The experience of having to move caused me more trauma and I wish I could have received the support and accommodation I needed in my home community. My question is: why are youth homelessness services not more available in growth corridors around Australia, despite these areas having some of the highest rates of domestic violence and youth homelessness?
