Status report

For

1. Fires are now more extreme, extensive and are occurring for longer periods of time.

2. Firefighting is cutting into the incomes of firefighters and limiting their capacity to continue.

3. Payments are necessary in order to ensure that all firefighters are treated equitably.

4. Firefighters need to be paid for the out-of-pocket expenses they incur while firefighting.

5. Payments are not intended to create a professional firefighting service.

SHOULD VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS BE PAID? - Arguments Against

Against

1. It is against the spirit of volunteerism.

2. Volunteers do not want payment.

3. The new scheme has not been equitably rolled out across states.

4. Paying volunteers does not guarantee businesses will be able to release them.

5. Paying firefighters could lead to the end of the volunteer organisations upon which Australia depends.

Commissioner of the New South Wales Rural Fire Service Shane Fitzsimmons has strongly rejected the need for more financial compensation or for the volunteers to be paid for their firefighting efforts.

Mr Fitzsimmons told Sky News he would put "very little store in anything the Volunteer Fire Fighters Association (VFFA) has to say," due to the lack of "access to information about who they claim to represent, how many they represent, and how they operate".

The Volunteer Fire Fighters Association’s union leader Mick Holton said situation that stands is out-of-control and more needs to be done, raising concerns over claims many firefighters are crowdfunding for necessary equipment.

Meanwhile, more than 2,000 firefighters will spend the holidays trying to contain the bushfires currently raging across parts of New South Wales.
